Robyler, University of Maryland University College.

  1. Large enough type - Use at least a 32-point font; use larger type if the audience is large and along distance away from the presenter.
  2. Contrast text and background - The audience cannot see too similar in hue to the background. Use text with high contrast to background.
  3. Minimize text on each frame - Use text to focus attention on main points, not present large amounts of information. Summarize ideas in brief phrases.
  4. Avoid too many different items on one frame - Frame designs should be simple, clear, and free of distractions. Too many items on one frame can interfere with reading, especially if some items are in motion.
  5. Avoid too many fancy fonts - many fonts are unreadable when projected on a screen. Use a plain sans serif (straight lines with no "hands and feets") font for titles, a plain serif font for other text.
  6. Avoid gratuitous sounds - Sounds interfere with communication when used solely for effect. They should always help communicate the content.
  7. Use graphics, not just text - Well-chosen graphics can help communicate messages. Text alone does not make best use of the capabilities of presentation software.
  8. Present in dark room - Frames can fade away if the room is too bright. Cover windows and turn off lights during a presentation.
  9. Avoid reading text aloud - Do not read what the audience can read for themselves. Use text to guide main points of discussion.
